Setbacks

A setback is the distance a building needs to be located away from the property lines. These distances are based on the zoning of your property.  Most structures cannot be built in the setback area, but there are some exceptions for accessory dwelling units and certain accessory structures.

How to find the setbacks for you property

1. Check your zoning

Look up your address on the Zoning Web Map.  Find the code for the zoning district your property is within.

2. Look up the setback requirements

If you are in a residential zone you can find the setback requirements in the Summary of Development Regulations [PDF].

If you are in a commercial zone, you can find the setback requirements by viewing the Zoning map and refereeing to the property regulations for each zone.
