Building codes are regularly updated. The permit application date determines the set of codes that apply to your project.

2022 California Building Codes Went Into Effect January 1, 2023

The California Building Standards Commission updates the Building Standards Code (California Code of Regulation, CCR, Title 24) every three years. The 2022 Codes were published on July 1, 2022 and became applicable to all building permit applications made on or after January 1, 2023.

An after-hours permit is required for construction on Saturdays and City Holidays (2024: 1/01, 1/15, 2/19, 5/27, 9/2, 11/11, 11/29, 12/24, 12/30). No construction is allowed on National holidays, such as Independence Day (7/4), Thanksgiving (11/28), Christmas (12/25), and New Years (1/01).

Applications received on or after January 1, 2020

Applications received on or after January 1, 2020 must meet the following set of building codes:

  • 2019 California Building Code (Based on the International Building Code, 2018 Edition with State amendments)
  • 2019 California Residential Code (Based on the International Residential Code, 2018 Edition with State amendments)
  • 2019 California Plumbing Code (Based on Uniform Plumbing Code, 2018 IAPMO Edition with State amendments)
  • 2019 California Mechanical Code (Based on the Uniform Mechanical Code, 2018 IAPMO Edition with State amendments)
  • 2019 California Electrical Code (Based on the National Electrical Code, 2017 Edition with State amendments)
  • 2019 California Referenced Standards Code
  • 2019 California Energy Code
  • 2019 California Green Building Standards Code
  • City of Walnut Creek Municipal Code
  • City of Walnut Creek EV charging station amendments

Applications received on or after January 1, 2017

Applications received on or after January 1, 2017 must meet the following set of building codes:
  • 2016 California Building Code (Based on the International Building Code, 2015 Edition with State amendments)
  • 2016 California Residential Code (Based on the International Residential Code, 2015 Edition with State amendments)
  • 2016 California Plumbing Code (Based on Uniform Plumbing Code, 2015 IAPMO Edition with State amendments)
  • 2016 California Mechanical Code (Based on the Uniform Mechanical Code, 2015 IAPMO Edition with State amendments)
  • 2016 California Electrical Code (Based on the National Electrical Code, 2014 Edition with State amendments)
  • 2016 California Referenced Standards Code
  • 2016 California Energy Code
  • 2016 California Green Building Standards Code
  • City of Walnut Creek Municipal Code
