Overview
The City of Walnut Creek has adopted a new Sustainability Action Plan in 2023. The Sustainability Action Plan focuses on the actions that our community will take in order to address climate change and improve the health and wellbeing of everyone in Walnut Creek. The Sustainability Action Plan will continue the City's efforts to address climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 40% below 1990 GHG emission levels by 2030 and 85% below 1990 GHG emission levels by 2045.
The final Sustainability Action Plan incorporates the feedback received from the public and the City Council from April 20-June 20, 2023. It was adopted by the City Council, by a unanimous vote, at the July 18 City Council meeting.
A one-page handout summarizing the timeline for the top sustainability goals included in the Sustainability Action Plan is also available.
With over 125 actions spread across near-term (by year-end 2023), mid-term (by year-end 2026), and long-term (by year-end 2030) timeframes, we're working diligently to meet our goals. In the near term, we've made significant progress in waste diversion, reducing the impacts of poor air quality, and establishing local resilience hubs. If you want to dive deeper into our progress on the short-term actions, check out the new Short-term Action Tracker.
