The Award Program

The President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) is a national volunteer awards program, encouraging citizens to live a life of service, offering presidential gratitude and national recognition. PVSA recognizes, celebrates and inspires volunteerism, service and citizenship in the community. Recognizing that our youth make significant contributions to our city, our schools, and our community on this day and in many other ways, The City of Walnut Creek, through its Youth Commission, is pleased to bring this prestigious award opportunity to our youth grades K-12.

Who Can Participate?

  • United States citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States (i.e., green card holder)
  • Must be at student at least five years old, K-12
  • Completes eligible service within a 12-month period (for annual Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards) and over a lifetime (for Lifetime Achievement Awards)
  • Must be a resident of Walnut Creek or have volunteered for a non-profit in Walnut Creek  

Eligible Service:

  • Unpaid acts of volunteer service benefiting others
  • Service through National service programs that provide a stipend (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) may count towards the Lifetime Achievement Award*, but not for the annual Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards)
  • Travel stipends, transit/parking passes, membership passes, expense reimbursements, and other nominal volunteer support do not impact service eligibility

Eligible Service does not include:

  • Donating funds
  • Political lobbying (Non-partisan voter registration is an eligible activity)
  • Religious instruction
  • Conducting worship service
  • Proselytizing
  • Volunteer service performed as part of court-ordered community service
  • Serving only family members

How to Submit Volunteer hours:

To qualify to receive the President's Volunteer Service Award for 2024, all service hours must be submitted by 5pm on January 31, 2025.
