Fences in residential areas

Most residential fences can be built without a permit if it meets certain height requirements. If you want to build a fence taller than 6 feet, you can apply for a minor use permit.

Requirements

To build a residential fence without a permit, it must meet the following height requirements:

  • No fence, wall or similar structure can exceed 6 feet in height.
  • If the fence, wall or similar structure is within the front yard setback area it can not exceed 3 feet in height

Corner lots

Corner lots have various configurations and sometimes they are considered as having two front yards. In all residential districts, no fence, wall or similar structure shall exceed three feet in height within the required front yard or within the street side yard of a reversed corner lot. Contact Planning staff to get guidance based on your property’s configuration.

Swimming pools

Swimming pools must be surrounded with a minimum 54-inch tall fence with a self-latching gate, or with a wall. Fences for swimming pools must comply with the requirements of the California Building Code or California Residential Code as applicable.
